She graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts in African and Afro-American Studies. As a Title I school educator, Cox-Benjamin was disheartened by the realties that many of her students faced. Consequently, she founded Elizabeth Foster Academy, Inc. a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization designed to help increase literacy awareness in underserved communities both locally and internationally with partnerships in Negril, Jamaica, Johannesburg, South Africa and Castries, St. Lucia. Her goal is to equip future generations with practices that will provide them with the knowledge to confront new situations and overcome obstacles with a steadfast resolve.
Cox-Benjamin has been recognized as a “Home Town Hero” and featured in the “New Author” section of Pride Magazine. She sits on the boards of Stoonie’s Closet, an organization that provides new clothing to homeless men, women and children and Everybody Reads Inc. She enjoys volunteering with organizations that focus on literacy disparities, participating in community activism and cultivating early childhood educational approaches.
